My interest in cemetery headstones (and skulls) began on a trip to Boston, Massachusetts where I visited the Granary Burying Ground. I became fascinated by the skull and crossbones on the headstones and thought, “that’s what I want on my headstone!”.
I was living in Bar Harbor, Maine at the time which is on Mount Desert Island (MDI). One of the best parts of living there was that I lived just yards from the water on Salisbury Cove. Acadia National Park was about two miles from where I lived, but I didn’t need to go to the park for scenic walks or nature…all I had to do was step outside.
A short walk away from my home was a small cemetery, Salisbury Cove Cemetery, where I would occasionally visit and, similarly to how I felt about the skull and crossbones on my headstone, this small family cemetery is where I wanted my final resting place to be.
Somewhere along the way, I started looking into other cemeteries on MDI and found the island was dotted with several small cemeteries. And so, my adventures began…
