I went to a large high school and as a somewhat popular athlete, naturally, I knew other athletes, both guys and gals. Sports practices and events were generally held after school and, for some sports, the gymnasium could be partitioned by folding doors so that more than one sport could be practiced. Men’s wrestling was a sport that overlapped with women’s basketball so I was familiar with the sport and occasionally attended, and enjoyed, the home wrestling matches. Some of the wrestlers and I traveled in the same circles so our paths overlapped along the way.
During the summer of 1980, when my boyfriend at the time asked if I wanted to go see a wrestling match at Shea Stadium, I said “Sure!”, thinking that I would be going to see wrestling based on my understanding of the sport. Additionally, my boyfriend and I were into Disco dancing and planned to go dancing after the wrestling match, so, I got all dolled up with the expectation of going dancing afterward.
